Summary
Abstract The vast majority of pertinent genetic and human palaeontological evidence indicates that an early transition from archaic to modern humans occurs in Africa. Interestingly, the earliest well dated modern human fossils all derive from eastern Africa: Omo Kibish KHS
(196 ka to 172 ka) and Herto (160 ka to 154 ka), both in Ethiopia (ka = thousand years ago). This suggests that modern humans may have originated in, and ultimately radiated out of, eastern Africa into the ‘peripheral’ regions of Africa, defined here as northern Africa and southern Africa, as well as into Eurasia. Evidence of the earliest presence of purported modern humans from both African ‘peripheral’ regions is assessed in this study. These include the Klasies River Mouth (KRM) sample from southern Africa and the Aterian-associated remains from North Africa, particularly the fragmentary subadult maxilla from Mugharet el ‘Aliya (High cave) near Tangier, Morocco. Both samples are maximally dated to ~130 ka and thus are significantly younger than the earliest eastern African modern humans. The KRM sample exhibits a significant amount of size and morphological variation, the latter reflecting a mosaic of archaic/modern anatomy. We interpret this morphological pattern as reflecting an admixed sample. The northern African evidence is less clear, but the morphology of the Tangier maxilla demonstrates archaic elements in the Aterian population, and this may well reflect the same pattern of admixture. We conclude that the evidence from the African ‘peripheries’ is consistent with admixture and that this broadly supports the assimilation model of modern human origins .

Background
Childhood adversity has been associated with onset of psychosis in adulthood but these studies have used only general definitions of this environmental risk indicator. Therefore, we sought to explore the prevalence of more specific adverse childhood experiences amongst those with and without psychotic disorders using detailed assessments in a large epidemiological case-control sample (AESOP).
MethodData were collected on 182 first-presentation psychosis cases and 246 geographically matched controls in two UK centres. Information relating to the timing and frequency of exposure to different types of childhood adversity (neglect, antipathy, physical and sexual abuse, local authority care, disrupted living arrangements and lack of supportive figure) was obtained using the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Questionnaire.
ResultsPsychosis cases were three times more likely to report severe physical abuse from the mother that commenced prior to 12 years of age, even after adjustment for other significant forms of adversity and demographic confounders. A non-significant trend was also evident for greater prevalence of reported severe maternal antipathy amongst those with psychosis. Associations with maternal neglect and childhood sexual abuse disappeared after adjusting for maternal physical abuse and antipathy. Paternal maltreatment and other forms of adversity were not associated with psychosis nor was there evidence of a dose–response effect.
ConclusionsThese findings suggest that only specific adverse childhood experiences are associated with psychotic disorders and only in a minority of cases. If replicated, this greater precision will ensure that research into the mechanisms underlying the pathway from childhood adversity to psychosis is more fruitful.

We have assessed the effectiveness of flexible-film negative-pressure isolators by physical and biological means. We have found that they afford a high degree of containment and therefore also of safety to hospital staff. We offer some recommendations on the operation of these isolators to ensure the optimum degree of protection.

The chromosomes of Platynereis dumerilii (Audouin & Milne-Edwards) are described here for the first time. A modal chromosome number of 2n=28 was recorded, based on counts conducted on metaphase spreads prepared from 24-h-old larvae. The karyotype comprises seven pairs, each of relatively large median (arm ratio, p/q=l.00–0.59) and submedian (arm ratio, 0.59–0.33) chromosomes. Attempts were also made to band the chromosomes using C-banding and silver staining methods. C-band-positive regions were localized on four chromosome pairs (three median, one submedian). A further two chromosome pairs (both median) were observed to have terminal nucleolar organizer regions (NORs). To our knowledge, this is the first time that these banding methods have been successfully applied to any polychaete species. These results are discussed in relation to the karyotypic variation within the class Polychaeta, and the family Nereidae in particular. A stable karyotype consisting of a moderate number of large and morphologically well-differentiated chromosomes, coupled with the ease of culture under laboratory conditions and short generation time, suggests that P. dumerilii is a potentially suitable model for evaluating marine contaminants for genotoxic activity.

Between April and September 2000, 60 injecting drug users in Scotland died or were hospitalized with severe illness. Laboratory investigations suggested that Clostridium novyi and other bacteria were important aetiological agents. To determine associated environmental/behavioural factors a case-control study was undertaken with 19 ‘definite’ and 32 ‘probable’ cases in Glasgow, Scotland. For every deceased case (n=19), up to three proxy individuals were interviewed. Three controls were identified for each case. Multivariate logistic regression analyses compared (i) all cases and controls; (ii) definite cases and matched controls; (iii) probable cases and matched controls. In all three analyses injecting into muscle or skin and injecting most of the time with a filter used by someone else were the variables most strongly associated with illness. Comparing only muscle-injecting cases and controls, cases were significantly more likely to have injected larger amounts of heroin per average injection than were controls. The findings make an important epidemiological contribution to the understanding of the public health and clinical implications of the contamination of illicit drugs by histotoxic clostridia.

The sol-gel process is a solution synthesis technique which provides a low temperature chemical route for the preparation of rigid transparent matrices. A number of laser dyes have been incorporated in different sol-gel matrices and tunable laser action has been demonstrated with these materials. This paper extends the sol-gel laser field into two significant areas, infrared dyes and pyrromethenes. The work with the tricarbocyanine dyes shows the versatility of sol-gel chemistry as organic modifications produce a favorable environment for the dye molecules. The results with the pyrromethene system show a considerable increase in output energy and offer the promise of longer laser lifetimes.

The material and spectroscopic properties of Cr-doped Ca5(PO4)3F (FAP) were investigated using several different chemical and physical means. From analytical titration measurements the chromium in Cr:FAP was found to be tetravalent. ESR measurements detected a trace (0.5 - 10 ppm) of Cr5+ (3d1) and no evidence for Cr3+ (3d3). The absorption and emission spectra of Cr: FAP can be interpreted on the basis of Cr4+ (3d2) ions substituting for P within a distorted tetrahedron of oxygen ions. Calculated electronic (Stark) levels for Cr4+ based on an approximate site symmetry of C4 agree well with levels deduced from an analysis of the experimental optical data. The model Hamiltonian includes Coulombic parameters B and C, interconfiguration interaction terms and the spin-orbit coupling for the 3d2 atomic configuration of Cr4+ and crystal-field terms in C4 symmetry. The parametrized Hamiltonian was diagonalized within the complete d2 configuration. Both free ion and crystal field parameters are presented.

Early lamb production is a specialist enterprise in which profitability is highly dependent on getting all the lambs sold while prices are still high in Spring when lamb is in short supply. This involves lambing in late December/early January. Hence ewes must be mated in August. Conventionally in the UK, this has been achieved by the use of progesterone-impregnated sponges and pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG). The ram effect is a powerful technique for the control of sheep reproduction. The objective of the present study was to reinvestigate the value of teasers for the stimulation of seasonal activity in the ewe.
125 (2-3 yr) Mule ewes (Blue-faced Leicester x Swaledale or Blackface), isolated from rams for two months, were used to investigate the effect of different durations of teasing on the stimulation of seasonal activity. Groups of 25 ewes were exposed to either teaser vasectomised rams and teaser ovariectomised ewes (induced into behavioural oestrus by an intramuscular injection of 0.2 mg of oestradiol benzoate) for 1 month (group l), 3 weeks (group 2) and 2 weeks (group 3); or vasectomised rams only for 2 weeks (group4); or left untreated (group 5). At the imposition of treatments, groups were isolated from each other and from contact with other 3heep by a distance of at least 1 km. Plasma progesterone was measured twice weekly on 8 animals, per group to determine ovarian activity.
